In this module, you will learn how to recognize normal behaviour in the most common farm species used in the laboratory, namely ruminants, pigs, and domestic fowl. You will also learn to identify abnormal behaviour and recognize signs of pain for each species. Additionally, you will discover different methods for assessing the pain these animals may endure during various research procedures. The module will also guide you in evaluating their welfare status, determining when they have reached a point of suffering beyond what is acceptable. You will then be able to use the directive to classify different examples of procedures and choose the most appropriate method to administer analgesia and anaesthesia.
At the end of the module, you will undergo an assessment to demonstrate your understanding of its content.
